Edward C. Hawkins Retired engineer

Services for Edward C. Hawkins, a professional engineer, will be held at 10 a.m. today at Christ Episcopal Church in St. Michaels.

Mr. Hawkins, who was 71, died of cancer Saturday at Memorial Hospital in Easton.

Mr. Hawkins worked for Martin Marietta and for the Bendix Corp. communications division in Towson. He lived in Stoneleigh from 1960 until 1984 when, retired from Bendix for four years, he moved to the Eastern Shore community of Bozman.

A registered professional engineer, Mr. Hawkins was a life member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and was a member of the University of Maryland Alumni Association.

An avid sailor, he was a member of the U.S. Power Squadrons and the Potapskut Sailing Association of the Magothy River. Mr. Hawkins built his own boats.

Mr. Hawkins is survived by his wife of 42 years, the former Martha Virginia Witter; a daughter, Virginia A. Leach of Green Lane, Pa.; two sons, Edward C. Hawkins Jr. of Severna Park and John D. Hawkins of Gainesville, Fla.; a brother, Elbert S. Hawkins of Arnold; and four grandchildren.
