January 22, 1991|By Edward Gunts

The Rouse Co. plans to begin work this month on a nine-story office building in Columbia that will serve as the new headquarters for the Ryland Group Inc.

The 167,000-square-foot building will be at Broken Land Parkway and Little Patuxent Parkway in downtown Columbia. Construction is expected to be completed in April 1992.

Rouse was selected more than a year ago to build the headquarters for Ryland, which will move nearly 500 employees from four other locations in Columbia.

One of the nation's largest homebuilders, the Ryland Group includes Ryland Homes, Ryland Building Systems and Ryland Mortgage Co. and its subsidiaries. Employees now work at the Ryland Group Building at 10221 Wincopin Circle and at the Clark Building, the Sterrett Building and the Ridgely Building, all on Sterrett Place in Columbia.

Cooper Carry and Associates Inc. of Washington is the architect for the new building, and Omni Construction Inc. is the general contractor.

Ryland will occupy about two-thirds of the the building, and Rouse will lease the rest to other tenants.
