Mount outlasts Marist, 76-71

EMMITSBURG -- Senior Alex Watson had 19 points, six rebounds and eight assists, and Scott Murphy scored 18, to lead Mount St. Mary's to a 76-71 Northeast Conference basketball win over Marist College last night before 3,050, the largest Knott Arena crowd of the season.

With the Mount (6-10, 4-2) leading, 59-49, with 10 minutes, 32 seconds to play, Watson scored all nine points in a 9-2 run that gave the Mountaineers their largest lead of the game, 68-51, with 7:57 left.

Marist (1-13, 0-4), behind the scoring of junior Fred Ingles, was able to cut the gap to 74-71 with 18 seconds remaining, but Murphy hit two free throws to clinch the decision. Ingles, who finished with a game-high 27 points, scored seven in the final 4:52.

With Marist leading, 13-12, with 11:54 left in the first half, the Mount scored 12 straight, capped by a Steve Kinney three-point basket with 8:34 to go.
