Iona scores first 11 points, cruises past Loyola, 83-56

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Iona College scored the first 11 points of the afternoon and cruised to an 83-56 victory over Loyola College in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's basketball game yesterday at the Mulcahy Center.

The Gaels placed four players in double figures, led by Sean Green. The 6-foot-5 senior forward, the most recent MAAC Player of the Week, had team highs of 19 points and seven rebounds. For the season, he is third in MAAC scoring at 22.1, ranking behind only La Salle's Doug Overton (27) and Loyola's Kevin Green (22.2).

Green was the Loyola scoring leader with 14, 10 in the second half. Freshman teammate Mark Sparzak, a 6-8 center from Bel Air, Md. (Calvert Hall), was a bright spot for the Greyhounds, getting five baskets and four rebounds in six minutes. The 10 points represented a career high.

Iona held a 40-25 halftime lead and used a 19-7 run in the first nine minutes of the second half to put the game away.

Loyola fell to 6-10 overall.
