Oakland Mills tops Mt. Hebron GIRLS

No. 3 Oakland Mills' 43-42 victory over visiting and No. 2 Mount Hebron last night was anything but pretty.

An estimated crowd of 450 saw errant passing and poor shooting by both teams, as the Scorpions (11-0, 3-0) beat the Vikings (8-3, 2-1) for the first time in seven years to claim at least a share of first place in the Howard County League.

"We played terrible," Oakland Mills coach Teresa Waters said. "We didn't execute at all. We ran our game plan maybe three or four minutes the entire game. Considering that, it was a great win."

With Oakland Mills trailing, 28-22, late in the third quarter, however, things were not looking good.

The six-point lead was Mount Hebron's largest, and the momentum seemed to be with the Vikings.

Not for long, though.

The Scorpions' Andrea Romich (16 points, 16 rebounds) hit a driving layup with 3 minutes, 56 seconds left in the third period to start a 14-2 run. Midway through the fourth quarter, Oakland Mills led, 38-30.

"At halftime, we regrouped and talked about everything," said forward Mia Dammen,
