Celebrate County's 154th Birthday With Historical Society

Happy 154th birthday, Carroll County.

The Historical Society is planning a birthday bash from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at 210 E. Main St.,Westminster.

Sherman-Fisher-Shellman House, right next door, will be rededicated during the festivities. Research unearthed during the restoration of the building has provided much new information about the county's history. An exhibit on that research will be on display.

Join the County Commissioners and the county legislative delegation at a 2 p.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony. Refreshments will be served in the Shriver-Weybright Auditorium. Come and sing "Happy Birthday" to our county.

Don't sit home and whine about the weather. Lots of events around the county can raise your spirits and make you feel better.

Westminster Fire Company has its annual banquet 6 p.m. Weds at fire hall, 66E. Main Street.

New Windsor firemen and ladies auxiliary also banquet at 5:30 pm Saturday at the Taneytown Activities Building.

TheSykesville-Freedom District Fire Department have their banquet, too,at the town social hall at 6 p.m. Saturday. Call the fire companies for information.

Those long winter nights can provide some educational opportunities, too.

Learn about the General Assembly with Delegate Richard C. Matthews at 7:30 tonight at North Carroll Library, Hanover Pike, Greenmount. Registration is required. Information: 374-1212.

Dragan Vuckovic, who leads pilgrims on tours to the site of a vision of Mary, will speak at Western Maryland College at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in McDaniel Lounge.

He will discuss the meaning of the controversial apparition in the remote farming village of Medjugorje, Yugoslavia. Information: 857-2560.

North Carroll High School's Drama Club treats the whole family with its performance of "The Sleeping Beauty of Loreland" 7 p.m. Friday and 2 and 7 p. m. Saturday.

Tickets are $1 per person. The school is at 3801 Hampstead Mexico Road, Hampstead. Information: 374-6105.

You can breakfast and hear the Morgan State University Choir at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Martin's Westminster, Route 140.

The former students of Robert Moton School sponsor the event. Cost is $20 per person and reservations are requested. Information: 848-3154.

How about some exercise? Bring your ski equipment and join a cross country ski at Piney Run Park's miles of trails at9:30 a.m. Saturday. Group and individual skiers are invited to participate. The park will have leaders available to offer advice to novices.

Bring a lunch and stay for hot chocolate and cookies at the Nature Center. No charge for this recreation.

The Chamber of Commerce has annual dinner dance to the tunes of Just Us from 6:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Saturday at Martin's Westminster, Route 140.

The $27.50 per person includes open bar, prime rib dinner and dancing. Reservations are required. Information: 848-9050.

Pleasant Valley Fire Co. wants to help you dance away any post-holiday blues at its Country Dance from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday at the fire hall on Richardson Road.
