January 16, 1991|By Staff report

More than 600 students at Lothian Elementary School are gathering toiletries, food and beverages for the troops in Operation Desert Shield. The program, "Gifts from the Heart" is sponsored by the school's Human Relations Committee.

Mary Brett, a counselor at the school, said the childrens' donations will be sent to the Persian Gulf by Valentines Day, hence the "Gifts from the Heart" theme. Donations will be accepted through Jan. 21.

Anyone can contribute to the effort, said Brett, who said items can be dropped off at the school during regular hours.

Here is a list of what is needed:

Nail clippers, travel games, microwave dinners, chewing gum, dried fruit, granola bars, hard candy, instant presweetened drinks, paperback books, playing cards.

Also, shampoo, soap, travel-size cologne, toothpaste, facial tissues, roll-on deodorant, writing paper, lip balm, tuna or chicken in flip-top cans.

Call the school for more information: 867-2886.
