Harry C. Bechtel Jr. Welder, active in church

Services for Harry C. Bechtel Jr., a retired welder who was active in church work, will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Hubbard Funeral Home, 4107 Wilkens Ave.

Mr. Bechtel, who was 72 and lived on Annapolis Road in Westport, died Saturday at the Harbor

Hospital Center after an illness of several months.

He retired 11 years ago from Steelcrafts Inc., having worked there and for other steel fabricators starting with the John McKenzie Steel Co. more than 40 years earlier.

The Millville, N.J., native came to Baltimore as a child with his family. During World War II, he was a staff sergeant with an Army field artillery unit in the Pacific theater.

A member of the Scott Street Baptist Church for more than 50 years, he served as chairman of the deacons, as Sunday school superintendent and as a trustee.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, the former Dorothy M. Schoenhals; a daughter, Barbara Bechtel of Baltimore; and a sister, Marian Hughes of Catonsville.
