CANDID CLOSET

January 16, 1991

It seems that the only thing that the Welsh brothers, who share an apartment and play lacrosse together, do not have in common is their closet. On Saturday night, when members of the Baltimore Tunder face off against the New England Blazers at the Baltimore Arena, the brothers will be there. In the first two games, Tim scored four goals and is one of the leading scorers on the team. Brother Pat has scored one goal with three assists.

Pat Welsh, 24, is a professional lacrosse player for Baltimore Thunder. He attended Loyola High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a lacrosse scholarship. He's president of his own marketing company, The Environ Marketing Corp., which studies product marketing trends. His dream is to establish an Australian branch of his marketing company, a place he and his brother, Tim, fell in love with while on a visit playing and coaching lacrosse. His hobbies include playing golf and coaching lacrosse at Loyola High School.

How would you describe your taste in clothing?

Somewhat traditional, but I like to dress up my conservative outfits with at least one thing that catches the eye. When I wear a suit, I wear a wild tie with it. I love ties.

7+ What's the newest thing in your closet?

A Perry Ellis blue wool pinstripe, double-breasted, suit.

What's the oldest thing in your closet?

A flannel blue and green polo shirt mom got for me when I was a freshman in college.

Do you have a true "standby" that you wear to feel and look good when you're in doubt?

black turtle neck and a pair of Banana Republic khakis, with Cole-Hahn loafers.

What have you held on to for sentimental reasons?

have a sweater that I got in Australia to play and coach lacrosse and see the country when I got out of college. It's real heavy, double layered wool, almost too warm to wear here.

If you had a chance to have a quiet little dinner with the person you'd most like to meet, who would that be and what would you wear?

I'd like to have dinner on a bearskin rug in front of a fireplace with Elle McPherson, the Sports Illustrated cover girl, and I would wear silk boxer shorts.

What is your wardrobe weakness?

Clothes are my weakness, but I probably have more sweaters than anything else.

What's the most expensive item in your closet?

The Perry Ellis suit.

What's the least expensive item in your closet?

I just bought a pair of MC Hammer pants. They are floral, baggy, comfortable lounge pants.

What are your favorite accessories?

I wear suspenders with most of my suits. I just bought some black and tan crocodile suspenders that are awesome.

What's your biggest wardrobe mistake?

A pair of purple, pleated khaki pants. I wore them once and caught a lot of grief, so I gave them away.

Do you have any shopping tips you'd like to share?

If you can't afford to buy it, you can't afford not to have it.

If you could buy anything you wanted, what would it be?

I would buy Australia.
