CURRENT volunteers' news and needs:

University of Maryland Medical Systems wants volunteers as receptionists for operating room areas. Hours are flexible. Call Liz Shire, 328-5600.

Child Abuse Prevention Center of Maryland wants volunteers for visiting as a supportive friend. Training session will be held 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Jan. 16 and 17 at 1310 S. Charles St. For details: Saundy Mercier, 576-2414.

The Children's Cancer Foundation Inc. volunteers are sponsoring their 7th annual bowl-a-thon at all Fair Lanes, Bowl Americas, Greenways and participating independent bowling centers in the Baltimore area Sunday, Jan. 20, through Feb. 10. All ages may participate, and pledge sheets are available at participating centers or by calling 486-4744 for details.

Volunteers for the Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem are holding an annual fund-raiser concert featuring pianist Mary Stanton and Allan Sternfield. 7:15 p.m. Feb. 3 at Beth Tfiloh Congregation, 3300 Old Court Road. For time and ticket details, call 486-9303.

Jewish National Fund's Green Sunday Phone-A-Thon planned for Sunday, Jan. 27, needs volunteers to call and to perform clerical tasks. Held in the Legg Mason offices in CommerCentre, Pikesville, volunteers will call and ask for donations to buy trees for Israel. For details and to volunteer, call 486-3317.

St. Peter's Adult Learning Center on S. Poppleton Street wants volunteers to help mentally handicapped adults by advocacy, job coaching and instruction in the volunteer's own specific skill. Call Vernice Anderson, 685-7340.

Maryland Lupus Foundation wants volunteers interested in clerical duties, computer assistance, direct patient services, fund-raising and special projects. Call 366-7272.

Maryland Office on Aging and the Home Builders Association of Maryland are teaming up to present Senior Housepitality, a project to help low-income seniors with house repairs. Volunteers who are HBAM members are being sought to help with the work, which will be done in September. Call Ilene Rosenthal, chief of housing and continuing care in the Office of Aging, or Laurie Betz, director of communication for HBAM, at 265-7400.

The 14th WBAL Auction for Center Stage will be 8 a.m. to midnight, Feb. 10. Volunteers are needed the day of auction. Call Robin Yasinow, 685-3200. Individuals or businesses who want to donate an item or service, call Sydney Wilner, 685-3200.
