Alice Mary Hartwell Former C&P operator

Services for Alice Mary Hartwell, a former telephone operator and medical secretary, were held yesterday in Port Orange, Fla.

Mrs. Hartwell, who lived in Baltimore with her husband, Bart, until 1970, died of heart failure Thursday in Daytona, Fla. She was 77.

Born Alice Mary Somerlock in Baltimore, she worked for the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. from about the time of World War II through the 1950s. After leaving C&P, she did secretarial work for various physicians.

She lived with her husband in the Baltimore County neighborhood of Baynesville until moving to Port

Orange about 20 years ago. In Florida, she was active in volunteer work, delivering hot meals to sick people and shut-ins.

She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, a club for former telephone workers.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Shirley A. Hartwell of Baltimore, Joan G. Johnson of Savannah, Ga., and Alice V. Kalamar of Plainview, N.Y.; a brother, Oscar F. Somerlock Jr. of Perry Hall; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

The family suggests that donations be made to Covenant United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 290044, Port Orange, Fla. 32127.
