Mount St. Mary's loses to LIU

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Senior Neil Smith scored 17 points, including Long Island's last five of the game, to lift the Blackbirds to a 68-65 Northeast Conference victory over Mount St. Mary's last night.

The loss ended a three-game winning streak for the Mount (4-9, 2-1). Long Island is 5-7, 1-3 in the NEC.

The Mount had trailed the entire game until the 13-minute, 56-second mark of the second half, when John Miller scored a three-point play for a 50-48 lead.

The Mount led, 55-51, with 10:58 remaining, but LIU scored 10 unanswered points. Senior Brent McCollin, who led LIU with 20 points, scored the last five in the run for a 61-55 lead with 8:46 to go.

The Mount's Alex Watson scored two baskets to spark an 8-2 run to tie the game, 63-63, with 2:40 left, when Smith went on his five-point scoring spree.

Miller, who had a game-high 23 points, scored the game's final points with 1:10 remaining. The Mount had one final possession, but Miller and Scott Murphy each missed desperation three-point shots.

Long Island scored the first eight points of the game and led by as many as 14 points, 27-13. McCollin scored 11 points before the intermission to spark the surge, before the Mount used a 10-2 run to close the gap to 39-36 at the intermission.
