Winter Striders Race Draws 76 Runners

January 13, 1991

In spite of a chilly drizzle Sunday, 76 runners competed in the first race of the Howard County Striders winter series at Jeffers Hill.

In the 15K race, Dave Brightwell outdistanced his nearest opponentsby four minutes in a time of 54 minutes, 42 seconds, a new course record.

Chris Chasse withstood a late surge by Jim O'Brien to win the men's 10K event in 37:04. O'Brien clocked a 37:46. Judi Greenblatt captured the women's 10K in 45:09. This was Greenblatt's first Striders series victory.

Rod Young started the new year by switching from thelong-distance races to the short-distance ones. Young easily won themen's two-miler in a fantastic time of 10:03, only one second short of the course record.

Laura Daniels outpaced Helen Beyers and Jenny Elzinga to triumph in the women's two-mile race in 15:22.

After the Jeffers Hill races, the Striders presented awards for the 1990 fall series. Roger Calvert captured the men's short distance title with155 points. Even though Calvert did not take first place in any of his races, he accumulated enough points to claim the overall championship.

With 66 points each, Pam Mooring and Laura Daniels tied for the women's short ditance championship. Mooring won all six races she entered.

In the men's long distance division, Jim Woods took firstplace with 164 points. Woods overtook John Hamilton's point total inthe last race of the series.

Vicki Avey claimed seven of the eight women's distance races she entered to win with a total of 82 points.
