Weather forces more postponements Nearly 80 games, matches not played

Poor road conditions caused by inclement weather caused school closings yesterday and the postponement of nearly 80 boys and girls basketball games and wrestling matches throughout the Baltimore metropolitan area.

Yesterday's closings marked the third time this week that some school systems in the area were closed because of the weather and poor road conditions.

It is the policy of schools in Baltimore City, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford and Howard counties to cancel all extra-curricular activities when schools are forced to close because of poor weather conditions.

Baltimore City schools were open yesterday, but all five counties closed their schools.

Although the city schools were open, only the Douglass at Carver boys basketball game was not postponed. Those two schools are only about two miles apart. Most teams would have had to travel a much greater distance for games.

Baltimore County has rescheduled all of its boys and girls basketball games for Monday at 6 p.m.

Anne Arundel County has rescheduled all of its boys and girls basketball games for Wednesday.

The Arundel Wrestling Tournament at Arundel High, scheduled for yesterday and today, has been condensed into a one-day tournament beginning today at 10 a.m.

Howard County supervisor of physical education and athletics Don Disney said the makeup date for boys and girls basketball games in that county is tentatively set for Jan. 25.

Howard County games postponed Wednesday have already been moved to Monday.

Disney said that with the forecast for more bad weather next week, the county may soon be playing games on Saturday.

"We would be playing tomorrow [Saturday], but there was not time to contact all of the schools," he said. "If we lose games next week we'll be playing Saturday games at 2 p.m."

Athletic directors at the city schools as well as the area's private and parochial schools, Harford County and Carroll County will be rescheduling yesterday's postponed games later.

As of last night, only two games had been rescheduled. The St. Frances at Loyola game has been moved to today at 2 p.m. Towson Catholic at Mount St. Joseph has been moved to Feb. 12 at 4 p.m.
