Sister Dorothy Mary Secretary at school

A Mass of Christian burial for Sister Dorothy Mary John, S.S.N.D., retired secretary at the Institute of Notre Dame, will be offered at 10 a.m. today in the chapel of Villa Assumpta, the motherhouse of her order, at 6401 N. Charles St.

Sister Dorothy Mary, who was 82 and had lived at the motherhouse since her retirement in 1988, died Thursday of heart failure at St. Joseph Hospital.

Known as Sister Mary August, S.S.N.D., when she entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1951, she was stationed at the institute, her order's East Baltimore high school, from 1955 until her retirement. Earlier, she taught the fourth grade at St. James School and managed the book store at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland.

The former Dorothy Theresa John was born in Pittsburgh and educated at the Most Holy Name elementary and business school and Curry College, both in Pittsburgh. Later, she earned a bachelor's degree at Notre Dame College.

She is survived by a sister, Dolores Maitz of Pittsburgh, and several nieces and nephews.
