Serious about peace

January 10, 1991|By Singapore Straits Times

RIGHTLY or wrongly, Israel is increasingly seen as an oppressor rather than a beleaguered little democracy fighting for survival.

It can change that with one stroke, by declaring its readiness to settle the Palestinian question without unreasonable precondition. Then the onus would be on Arabs and Palestinians to show they too are serious about peace.

The alternative, to go on as before as if the world had not changed, means increasing isolation and fighting not only old enemies but one-time friends as well.
