Dr. L. N. D'Elia, gynecologist, dies

&TC A Mass of Christian burial for Dr. Lawrence N. D'Elia, who worked at hospitals and other institutions after retiring from private practice as an obstetrician and gynecologist, will be offered at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Mark's Roman Catholic Church, 30 Melvin Ave. in Catonsville.

Dr. D'Elia, who was 71, died Monday at St. Agnes Hospital after a heart attack at his home on Forest Avenue in Catonsville.

He retired from private practice in 1971 after 25 years. He then worked for 10 years in the emergency room at St. Agnes Hospital, where he had been a staff member and served as an intern and resident.

He also served as a consultant at the University of Maryland Baltimore County's student clinic and at Spring Grove State Hospital.

In 1981, he became a staff doctor at the National Security Agency, retiring in 1989.

Born in Baltimore and graduating from City College, he attended the Johns Hopkins University before his 1941 graduation from Springfield State College in Massachusetts and his 1944 graduation from the Boston University Medical School. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps for two years after his graduation from medical school.

Dr. D'Elia was a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the Obstetrics and Gynecology Society of Maryland, the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland and the American Medical Association.

He was a golfer and a member of the Rolling Road Golf Club.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, the former Mary Angela Ricker; four daughters, Kathleen M. Flynn, Deborah C. Church, Suzanne L. Wright and Lisa A. Scrivner, all of Catonsville; two sons, Lawrence N. D'Elia III of Ellicott City and Douglas R. D'Elia of Catonsville; a sister, Eleanore D. Karfgin of Towson; and 13 grandchildren.

The family suggested memorial contributions to the American Heart Association.
