WASHINGTON — Representative Beverly B. Byron, D-6th, says she's ready to support the use of force in the Persian Gulf, if necessary.
Byron chairs the military personnel subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee, a post that puts her in regular contact with soldiers and their families.
The Saudi Arabian desert is "not a pleasant place to be," said Byron, who has visited the Gulf. "Yet . . . the troops are strongly committed."
If peaceful means don't achieve an Iraqi departure from Kuwait by the Jan. 15 date set by the United Nations, she will supportPresident George Bush if he decides to use force.
"If it comes toit, I think that's what we have to do," she said.
