Council To Talk Trees

January 06, 1991

MOUNT AIRY — A proposed ordinance aimed at preserving woodlands in new developments will be among the topics of discussion by the Town Council at its meeting tomorrow.

Last month, the town Planning Commission approved a draft ordinance, which was forwarded to the council.

The measure would apply to developments on parcels that are 500,000 square feet or larger.

At least 30 percent of the existing trees at a residential development must remain undisturbed, while at least 15 percent must stay intact at industrial or commercial developments, according to the draft ordinance.

Some members of the commission, which narrowly approved the draft measure, 3-2, didn't think it was tough enough.

Also on the agenda is appointment of members to the newly created Beautification Commission, a volunteer group that arose from the defunct Beautification Committee.

The meeting begins at 8 p.m. at Town Hall.
