Frees Is Honored

Western Maryland College football player Eric Frees of Ephrata, Pa.,has been selected to the Champion U.S.A. Division III All-America Team.

The Green Terrors' tailback earned one of the two running backspots on the second-team offense. A total of 122 players were named to the first, second and third teams and to the honorable-mention unit. A panel of 25 sports information directors representing four playoff regions in NCAA Division III selected the group out of a ballot that included 412 players.

Frees, a 5-foot-8, 170-pound junior, became the school's career leader in rushing yards with 3,736 yards, rushing attempts with 755, rushing touchdowns with 30, total touchdowns with 33 and points with 200. The Ephrata High School graduate, also selected a Centennial Football Conference first-team All-Star for the second straight season, broke his own single-season records this year with 295 carries for 1,594 yards and 11 touchdowns.

In addition, Frees caught six passes for 48 yards and returned 17 kickoffs for 361 yards, including one fora touchdown, giving him a team-high 2,003 all-purpose yards.

The two-time Green Terror Most Valuable Player led the CFC in rushing with a 183-yard average in conference games, and his 159.4-yard overall average placed him fourth in Division III.

Frees is second on the state's career collegiate rushing list, just 444 yards shy of breaking the record of 4,179, held by Navy's Napoleon McCallum.
