Bubbly Fashions For Babies

January 06, 1991|By Donna Peremes

As Father Time makes way for Baby New Year, what better way to ring in 1991 than by showcasing the talents of one of Maryland's own award-winning baby-and-childwear designers, Amy Schwab Owens.

Ms. Owens is design director of the Schwab Co., a third-generation, Cumberland-based manufacturer of children's clothes and sleepwear. It markets its fashions under three trademarks: Little Me, for preemies through toddler 4; Gear Kids, sleepwear and playwear for 1- to 2-year-olds; and Mufflings, for girls and boys from 1 to 4 years old.

Her designs for the Mufflings collection (titled after a childhood nickname of Ms. Owens') have just earned her a fourth consecutive "Earnie" award from the Childrenswear Manufacturer's Association and Earnshaw magazine. After her third Earnie in 1989, she was entered into the Earnie Hall of Fame.

"Children are built so differently than juniors and adults that there's a whole different way for designing for their shapes," she says. One distinguishing feature is "their little round tummies" -- hence the Mufflings collection features bubbly, round, comfortable shapes with lots of room to move.

Ms. Schwab's designs are available locally at the Baby Shop, Kids Closet and the Pied Piper, and at some major department stores.
