* ALLEN: George Allen was remembered as a winning football coach and a lot more at a memorial service yesterday at Rolling Hills Estates in California where more than 1,000 former players, longtime friends and family paid tribute to him.

"One of the favorite expressions of Coach Allen was, 'When I run into a rock or a boulder, no matter how large or how small, I'll find a way to move it,' " said Roman Gabriel, who played for Allen as a quarterback with the Los Angeles Rams.

"We listen to a lot of people, but we learn from a few. George Allen was one of those few."

The famed football coach died Monday at his home at age 72. An autopsy showed he died of cardiac arrest resulting from an irregular heart beat diagnosed three weeks earlier. The problem caused a fatal heart spasm.

A private burial was held early yesterday. Former quarterback Billy Kilmer, former defensive end David "Deacon" Jones, longtime friend Bill Harris and Allen's three sons served as pallbearers.
