Chiefs at Dolphins

January 05, 1991|By Vito Stellino

Site: Joe Robbie Stadium, Miami. Time: 4 p.m.

Radio: WBAL (1090 AM), WTOP (1500 AM)

TV: Channels 13, 7

Line: Dolphins by 2

Last week: The Chiefs (11-5) beat the Bears, 21-10. The Dolphins beat the Colts, 23-17.

Last meeting: The teams didn't play this season, but Kansas City swept Miami last year, winning the second game, 27-24, on Nick Lowery's 41-yard FG with 1:31 left to play in the season finale.

The series: The Chiefs have a 9-7 edge. Their only previous playoff game was one of the most famous in NFL history, the Dolphins' 27-24, Christmas Day victory in 1971 that started the Dolphins on the road to three straight Super Bowl appearances. The game is the longest in NFL history -- lasting 82:40.

On the sidelines: Don Shula has a 297-136-6 overall record in 28 years as a head coach in Baltimore and Miami. Only George Halas (325) has more victories. Marty Schottenheimer is 65-43-1 in seven years in Cleveland and Kansas City.

What the Dolphins have to do to win: Win the ground battle. The Dolphins are 22nd in the league rushing the ball and 16th against the rush. They have to get a running game going, and they must stop Barry Word and Christian Okoye from running over them.

What the Chiefs have to do to win: Win the air battle. The Chiefs have to stop QB Dan Marino and a Miami offense that has the fourth-best passing attack in the league. Kansas City QB Steve DeBerg, playing with a broken finger on his non-throwing hand, has to penetrate a defense that is fifth against the pass.

Injuries: LB Percy Snow (knee), T Irv Eatman (back), CB Albert Lewis (hip), NT Greg Meisner (flu) are questionable; S Deron Cherry (knee) is probable. Dolphins: NT Alfred Oglesby (groin) is questionable; G Harry Galbreath (knee), NT Shawn Lee (ankle), CB Rodney Thomas (groin) are probable.

Outlook: This game presents a fascinating contrast in styles. The Chiefs like to run, and the Dolphins like to pass. It looks like a tossup.

Chiefs roster Head coach: Marty Schottenheimer
