Baltimore Orioles -- Agreed to terms with C Bob Melvin on a two-year contract.

Minnesota Twins -- Named former Oriole Jim Dwyer hitting instructor and Paul Kirsch first base coach for their Class AAA Portland farm team.

Montreal Expos -- Agreed to terms with P Barry Jones on a two-year contract.

Seattle Mariners -- Agreed to terms with C Scott Bradley on a one-year contract.

Texas Rangers -- Agreed to terms with P Jose Guzman on a one-year contract.


Dallas Mavericks -- Announced plans to sign F Howard Wright to a 10-day contract as a replacement for injured F Herb Williams.

New Jersey Nets -- Activated F-C Roy Hinson off the injured list and replaced him there with G Tate George.


Arkansas -- Arkansas Athletic Director Frank Broyles has recommended a new five-year contract for first-year head football coach Jack Crowe.

Mississippi State -- Head football coach Jackie Sherrill announced the hiring of assistants Bud Ratliff as recruiting coordinator and Rick Christophel, formerly Vanderbilt.

Pittsburgh -- Announced C Bobby Martin will miss two to four weeks after undergoing surgery for an infected finger.

Vanderbilt -- New head football coach Gerry DiNardo announced the hiring of assistants Don Frease and Chris Symington, who coached with DiNardo at Colorado, Carl Reese, an assistant at Navy, Jerome Oliver, from Western Illinois, Bill Elias, out of coaching last season, Bob McConnell, from Massachusetts, Fred Jackson, from Purdue, and Hal Hunter, the former Baltimore Colt coach who was at Akron last year. Ron Case will be retained from Watson Brown's staff.

Washington Redskins -- Waived TE Ken Whisenhunt, activated OT Ray Brown from injured reserve.
