Baltimore officer injured on street

January 05, 1991

An on-duty Baltimore police officer was seriously injured yesterday when he swerved on his motorcycle to avoid hitting a child and fell, police said.

Officer James Grace, 32, was driving south in the 1100 block of Pennsylvania Avenue at 6:15 p.m. yesterday when a child ran into the road, said Dennis S. Hill, police spokesman.

Officer Grace swerved to avoid the child and the motorcycle fell to the left, Mr. Hill said. The officer slid about 30 feet with the motorcycle on top of him and another 20 feet without it, before he slammed into a parked car.

Mr. Hill said Officer Grace, who was wearing a helmet, suffered multiple bruises and head injuries and was taken to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center. He was in serious, stable condition last night. The child was not injured.

Officer Grace is a 10-year veteran of the Baltimore police force.
