Fire damages medical offices in Columbia

January 04, 1991

A fire early today at a medical office complex in Columbia did an estimated $300,000 damage to an optical company and several doctors' offices.

Battalion Chief Donald Howell, of the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services, said the one-alarm fire began shortly after 1 a.m. at the complex, in the 10700 block of Hickory Ridge Road. The complex is adjacent to Howard County General Hospital.

No one was in the building at the time and there were no injuries as a result of the fire.

Howell said the fire apparently started at the Optical Scene Co., where glasses are made and repaired. The company's offices were destroyed, Howell said.

Moderate to heavy smoke damaged occurred in three adjacent medical offices, Howell said, but the fire did not spread to those offices.

Bob Thomas, deputy chief state fire marshal, said the cause of the fire was under investigation. "We have no suspicious circumstances," he added.

Officials said 24 firefighters worked for about an hour to extinguish the fire.
