Barbara Horton Mathematics teacher

A memorial service for Barbara Horton, who had been a mathematics teacher and tutor, will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Stony Run Friends Meeting House, 5116 N. Charles St.

Mrs. Horton, who was 58 and lived in Lutherville, died Dec. 20 of cancer at the Manor Care Towson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She taught mathematics at Friends School and tutored students from Friends and other private schools for many years before retiring in ill health about five years ago.

Later, in addition to private tutoring, she taught and tutored for short periods at the Bryn Mawr and Garrison Forest schools.

The former Barbara Selis was a native of Baltimore and a graduate of Forest Park High School and the Johns Hopkins University.

She was a member of many groups, including Americans for Democratic Action, the League of Women Voters, Common Cause, the Orton Society, Baltimore Neighborhoods Inc., Mensa, the Towson YMCA and the Johns Hopkins Club.

Her husband, Jay Andrew Horton Jacobs, died in 1962.

She is survived by a daughter, Ellen Horton Ruggieri of Silver Spring; a son, David Horton of Columbia; her parents, Harry and Betty Selis of Pompano Beach, Fla.; a sister, Jackie Chertkof of Baltimore; a brother, Richard Selis of Denver; and three grandchildren.
