3 shot, 1 hit in head with bat at two New Year's Eve parties

Three people were shot and a fourth seriously injured with a baseball bat during two separate New Year's Eve parties in Columbia, according to Howard County police.

James Ricardo Douglas and Harold Lemar Starks, both 19 and of the Coopertone apartments in the 5800 block of Stevens Forest Road, Columbia, were shot about 9:45 p.m. Monday after telling two unknown men to leave a party at an apartment there. Police said the two suspects fled on foot.

Mr. Douglas was in serious but stable condition at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center. Mr. Starks was in stable condition at Howard County General.

No arrests have been made.

In another incident at 12:30 a.m. yesterday, two people were assaulted after asking four men to leave a party in the 6600 block of Shady Grove, Columbia. Police said the men left but three of them returned shortly, forcing their way into the apartment.

The victims were identified as Reginald Walters, 15, of the 9500 block of Mellenbrook Road, Columbia, who was struck in the head with a baseball bat, and Sherman Brooks, 22, of the 6400 block of Woodgrain Circle, Baltimore, who was shot in the back with a .22-caliber handgun.

Young Walters was listed in serious but stable condition at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center last night, and Mr. Brooks was in stable condition there.

Police arrested and charged two men with assault with intent to murder and breaking and entering in the Shady Grove incident. They were identified as Damon Lamont Brooks, 20, of the 6300 block of Scarlett Petal, Columbia, and Darren Anthony Smith, 24, 9300 block of Kenbrook Court, Laurel.

Also charged with breaking and entering was Darrell Eugene Matthews, 18, of Severn.
