* WHAT'S AHEAD: Vs. Pittsburgh Bulls, Saturday (8 p.m.) at Pittsburgh Civic Arena.

* WRAPUP: In its Major Indoor Lacrosse League opener, the Thunder lost to the Detroit Turbos, 20-16, Saturday before 9,927 at the Baltimore Arena. Paul and Gary Gait, who led Syracuse to three NCAA championships, celebrated their MILL debut by combining for 11 goals and four assists (Paul, the game's MVP, had seven and two, Gary four and two).

"The Gaits did us in," said Thunder general manager Darrell Russell. "I've never seen two guys dominate an athletic contest like that. Their presence was overwhelming. Detroit has to be the team to beat, just because of the Gaits.".

Baltimore took a 5-0 first-quarter lead and still led at halftime, 11-9. The Thunder's Jeff Jackson had three goals and two assists and won seven of nine faceoffs. Matt Kerwick was two and two, Ricky Sowell one and three, John Nostrant three and zero, Tim Welsh two and two and Pat Welsh zero and three. New goalie Jeff Gombar played the first three quarters before yielding to Tom Manos.
