No. 7 Catonsville advances with 75-61 win over Atholton

December 28, 1990|By Bob Clark

About the time Catonsville tapped off against Atholton in an opening-round game in the Gold Division of the 15th Annual Baltimore County Holiday Invitational, the weather outside was just becoming frightful.

But on a day when half the opening-round schedule of six games at Essex Community College had to be postponed because of impending inclement weather, unbeaten and No. 7-ranked Catonsville advanced as expected with its seventh victory of the season, 75-61 over Atholton (2-4).

It didn't take Catonsville long to become accustomed to the Essex CC court, as the Comets hit five of their first six shots to open an 11-2 lead 2 minutes, 15 seconds into the game. Senior captain David Clark scored seven in that opening spurt.

The Comets built a lead of 17 in the second quarter, but the Raiders kept battling back just when they appeared ready to be routed.
