The fourth-seeded North County girls basketball team struggled early but held off fifth-seeded Mercy, 59-53, yesterday in the first round of the 12th Annual Noel Classic at Archbishop Spalding High.

Because of the snow, only one other first-round game was played, and top-seeded St. Mary's defeated eighth-seeded John Carroll, 57-50.

Yesterday's other first-round games will be played today. Mount de Sales takes on Old Mill at 11 a.m., and Spalding meets Centennial at 1 p.m.

Mercy takes on John Carroll at 3 p.m. in a consolation game followed by North County vs. St. Mary's in the 5 p.m. semifinal. The Mount de Sales-Old Mill and Spalding-Centennial losers play in a consolation game at 7 p.m., and the winners play in the semifinal at 9 p.m.

Junior guard Stephanie Rohe scored 21 points in the first half and finished with a game-high 34 for Mercy.

Senior Kim Miller led North County in scoring and rebounding with 27 and eight, respectively. The only other Knight to score in double figures was junior Renita Johnson. The 6-foot center had 16 points and six rebounds.
