North County and St. Mary's advanced to the semifinal round of the Noel Girls Basketball Classic at Archbishop Spalding High School yesterday.
Fourth-seeded North County (6-0) downed fifth-seeded Mercy, 59-53, rebounding from a 12-0 deficit early in the first quarter.
"I don't think we were (mentally) there during the first quarter," said Knights head coach Entsminger. "It must have been the layoff, because we weren't running the offense the way it was supposed to be run. We forced a lot of shots and committed 14 turnovers (during the quarter). We played better as a team during the second half."
Kim Miller led North County with 27 points and eight rebounds, followed by Renita Johnson's 15 points and six rebounds. Mercy's Stephanie Rowe led all scorers with 34 points in a losing effort.
