Area College Basketball Preview

December 27, 1990

* WHEN: Tonight, 7.

* WHERE: Madison Square Garden, New York.

* RADIO: WBAL-AM 1090.

* OUTLOOK: The Terps (4-3) meet Rutgers (5-2) in the first round of the tournament, with South Carolina playing Brigham Young in the second game at 9. The consolation and championship games are Saturday at 7 and 9, respectively. Maryland is seeking its third straight win and first away from Cole Field House, where it is 4-0 . . . Through seven games, the Terps are holding opponents to 40.5 percent field goal shooting. Shooting guard Matt Roe has contributed not only a 17.1-point average but 5.7 rebounds, after never averaging more than 2.5 rebounds at his previous school, Syracuse.

Maryland coach Gary Williams calls Rutgers' 6-foot-8 Keith Hughes "a great player," not only because of his 19.9 scoring mark but because he averages 12.1 rebounds . . . Frank Horton, who has been working out with the Terps since the start of fall practice, has earned a spot on the traveling team. The 6-3 swingman is from Silver Spring.

RIDER VS. MOUNT ST. MARY'S * WHEN: Tonight, 7:30.

* WHERE: Knott ARCC, Emmitsburg.

* OUTLOOK: The Mount (1-7) is off to its worst start in 20 years and is 0-3 at home. Jim Phelan's team has lost four in a row, to George Mason, North Carolina State, James Madison and Holy Cross -- four teams that have been to the NCAA tournament or NIT in the last two years. Two Mount St. Joseph grads, John Miller and Alex Watson, continue to lead the Mount in scoring. Both average just over 14 points a game.

Rider (4-5) will be playing its fourth straight road game. During the last four years, the Broncs are 2-50 when they've played on their opponent's home floor (that doesn't count neutral sites). Rider leads the series 6-5, although the two teams haven't met since 1966.
