What's Rhyme And Reason For Christmas? Read On

December 27, 1990|By Joni Gruhne

In yesterday's Severna Park Neighbors column, The Anne Arundel County Sun Football Coach of the Year was misidentified. This year's top coach was Pete Regala of Old Mill.

The Anne Arundel County Sun regrets the error.

'Twas two days after Christmas, a deplorable scene.

Ribbons and wrappings, red, silver and green, Were piled here and there, a right messy old room, And I cried when I saw it, "I can't find the broom."

I had asked for a trip, a safari or two, But all I received was a ride to the zoo.

My diamonds were fakes; My leather unreal, My Godiva was Brachs; My chances were nil To receive what I hoped for, hinted and dreamed; All I had asked was to live like a queen.

When what did my wondering ears really hear?

"Gee Mom, glad you're with us."

"Merry Christmas, my dear."

So I'm rich after all; in intangibles sound (And you won't believe the great sales that I found!) Couldn't resist the iambic meandering, but now to the news.

* During the semester break, while our teen-agers are busy malling, let's consider some of their recent accomplishments while otherwise occupied -- in school.

This semester, Severna Park High athletes have earned county, regional and state honors in both team and individual events.

The girls soccer team won the county championship, going on to win the regional and state crowns. The boys soccer team won the regular-season championship. The field hockey team enjoyed its usual success by becoming county and regional champions. The boys soccer, girls cross country and football teams all ended their seasons as county champs.

Individual honors went to Anne Arundel County Sun's Runner of the Year in cross country, Megan Ambrose; All-County Cross Country players Megan Ambrose, Brian Kaupa and Fran Mackey; the Anne Arundel County Sun's Field Hockey Player of the Year, Katie Woodcock; All-County Field Hockey First Team players Shannon Fitzgerald, Amy Dolan, Petra Smeehuyzen, Hillary Kuker, Tricia Gately and Katie Woodcock; Second Team players Kelly Fennessy and Jessie Kasmir; Honorable Mention players Holly Roessler and Jen Stone.

Individual awards in boys soccer: All-County First Team: Brian Peterson, Mark Budzinski and Jason Zaks; Second Team: Mike Crawford and Nate Scheck; Honorable Mention: Steve Neuberger and Jamie Cornett; Sun All-Metro Second Team: Brian Peterson; Coaches All-State First Team: Jason Zaks and Brian Peterson; Second Team: Mark Budzinski.

Individual honors in girls soccer: Sun All-Metro Player of the Year: Tami Riley; Coach of the Year: Joyce Stefancik; All-County First Team: Betsy Anderson, Tami Riley and Tina Riley; The Capital's All County First Team: Michele Cope; Second Team: Nicki Cocere; Honorable Mention: Erin Wylde, Lisa Cope and Amy Carnaggio.

Making the Volleyball All County First Team was Kim Aller, with Cassandra Melton and Jaime Pirotte earning Second Team honors.

Individual honors in football: All-County First Team: Marcus Coates, Eric Brown, Marc Anderson, Glen Haught, Mark Miles, Kevin Johnson, Derrick Moran, Bobby McCandless and John Jennings; Second Team: Roy Bowerman, Eric Hemmer and Joe Brooks; Honorable Mention: Thad Turpin and Matt Glenn. The Anne Arundel County Sun named Andy Borland Football Coach of the Year.

As you can tell by this list, Severna Park athletes bring home the trophies -- so many during the last several seasons that it took a generous gift from the Class of 1989 to build enough new trophy cases to display all the awards. Look for them along the gym lobby walls sometime in January.

* Speaking of Severna Park High, English teacher Kay McFadden reminds parents and students that time is running out for ordering a copy of the 1991 yearbook, "Embers." Orders must be placed by Wednesday, Jan. 9, accompanied by a deposit of $25 or the full amount of $47.50.

Make your student's copy of this year's "Embers" really memorable by purchasing space for personal use in the advertisement section. Well wishes, baby pictures or almost anything you can think of can be inserted as a special memento.

A full-page is $100, half-page is $60, quarter-page is $35, eighth-page is $20, and business patron is $10. Orders must be placed no later than Thursday, Jan. 3, by contacting Ms. McFadden at 544-0900.

And finally, your help is needed at the school in more ways than you know. Volunteers are urgently needed to assist in the health room, guidance department and media center, as well as with the newsletter and in several other ways. If you can spare time once a week, once a month, or even if you would rather be called as a special need arises, contact Volunteer Coordinator Mary V. Showell at 544-0900.

* If you can use some help with your student's college finances, read on.

Champion Realty is offering several $1,000 scholarships for students with at least a C average who plan to attend Anne Arundel or Chesapeake community colleges. See your high school counselor for details.
