A memorial service for Roger Brooke Hopkins Jr., a retired banker and former hospital board president, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. John's Huntingdon Episcopal Church, Greenmount Avenue and Old York Road.

Mr. Hopkins died of cancer Christmas Eve at his home in Baltimore. He was 78.

The son of Roger Brooke and Josefa M. Hopkins, he attended Gilman School and St. George's School in Newport, R.I., and graduated from Harvard College in 1935.

He married the former Isabelle Whedbee in 1940. She died in 1989.

After serving in the Pacific as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Mr. Hopkins returned to Baltimore and worked for many years in the trust department of Maryland National Bank. He was a vice president at the bank when he retired in 1974.

He held a number of positions in charitable organizations. He was president of the board of trustees of the James Lawrence Kernan Hospital from 1973 to 1982. He also was a member of the board of the Visiting Nurses Association of Baltimore and a board member of the Mittendorf Foundation.

After his retirement, he gave a series of private lectures on French and English history and helped organize and lead tours to France, Spain and Italy.

He is survived by his son, Brooke Hopkins of Salt Lake City, and a daughter, Lisa Hopkins Wheeler of Lyme, N.H.

The family suggested memorial contributions to the Kernan Hospital or to St. John's Huntingdon Episcopal Church.
