NAVY OFFICER SENT TO GULF, PROMOTED

Navy Lt. j.g. Christopher M. Cook, son of Ramon and Doris Cook of Laurel, is in the Middle East in support of Operation Desert Shield and has been promoted to his present rank while serving aboard the Mayfield, Fla.-based USS Spuance.

Cook is a 1988 graduate of the Naval Academy, with a bachelor of science degree, and a 1989 graduate of George Washington University with a master's of science degree.

He joined the Navy in May 1988.

GLENELG HIGH MARINE FINISHES BASIC CLASS

2nd Lt. Jason M. Levinson, a 1984 alumnus of Glenelg High School, has graduated from the Basic School at the Marine Corps Development Command, Quantico, Va.

The 6 months of training included instruction on land navigation, marksmanship, tactics, military law and Marine Corps history.

Levinson, who joined the Marines in December 1987, is a 1989 graduate of Towson State University.

SEAMAN COMPLETES RECRUIT TRAINING

Navy Seaman Recruit Aaron S. Bennett, son of Steven and Dorthea Bennett of Mount Airy, has completed recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

During Bennett's eight weeks of instruction, he studied seamanship, close order drill, naval history and first aid.

The 1988 graduate of Linganore High School joined the Navy last August.

COLUMBIA MARINE ENDS RECRUIT TRAINING

Marine Pfc. Maurice J. Thompson, son of George Thompson of Columbia, has completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

In his 13-week training cycle, Thompson participated in an active physical conditioning program and gained proficiency in a variety of military skills, including first aid, rifle marksmanship and close order drill.

Thompson is a 1990 graduate of Woodlawn Senior High School.

MOUNT AIRIAN FINISHES NAVY RECRUIT COURSE

Navy Seaman Recruit Mary S. McCarty, daughter of Michael McCarty of Mount Airy, has completed recruit training at Orlando, Fla.

At the Recruit Training Command McCarty, who joined the Navy in July 1990, studied seamanship, naval history and first aid during her eight-week instruction cycle.

OAKLAND MILLS GRAD FINISHES NAVY BASIC

Navy Seaman Apprentice Marc F. Jacobs, son of Malcolm and Maxine Jacobs of Columbia, has completed recruit training at Recruit Training Command, San Diego.

Jacobs studied general military subjects designed to prepare him for further academic and on-the-job training in one of the Navy's 85 basic fields.

A 1990 graduate of Oakland Mills High School, he joined the Navy in August.
