$10,000 scholarships offered in black history essay contest

The Mid-Atlantic Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Inc. and Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc. are offering $10,000 scholarships to the winners of a Black History Month Essay Contest.

Students in Baltimore and in Washington, D.C., will be asked to address the topic, "The Value of an Education -- Within the Context of Black History Month."

Febaruary is Black History Month.

The contest is open to both minority and non-minority high school students in grades 9 through 12. The winner in each city is to be awarded a $10,000 scholarship.

Those winners will compete for an additional $15,000 scholarship that will be awarded to the winner of the national contest that will be judged in Atlanta.

Contest information is to be sent to English teachers in Baltimore and Washington by Dec. 26. Each school is to declare a winner by Jan. 28. The citywide winners are to be announced in early February.
