Key Honors Achievers

December 19, 1990

UNIONTOWN - Francis Scott Key High School recognized its highest academic achievers at an Honors Reception Dec. 5 that included the parents of the students.

Students who received straight A's were honored along with other top students with academic certificates, letters or pins.

A number of guests spoke during the assembly.

Francis "Skip" Fennel, associate professor of education at Western Maryland College, stressed the importance of five steps in education: student involvement in the problem-solving process, perseverance, practical use of knowledge, ability to articulate and finding a final solution.

School Superintendent R. Edward Shilling thanked the parents for attending the reception and told the students, "You have done a tremendous job, but don't get so hung up on getting a 4.0 that you are afraid to reach for challenges, and don't let a B devastate you."

He encouraged students to "hunt for balance" in their lives and noted he sees a lot of young people like the FSK students who care.

FSK principal George Phillips and assistant principals Bruce Cowan and Gayle McAdams presented the awards. Phillips also urged the students to make use of their teachers by learning more than just what is in the textbooks.
