College basketball

ACC -- Named Maryland's Bonnie Rimkus (25 points, 10 rebounds in one game) Rookie of the Week.

Pro basketball

NBA -- Phoenix Suns G Kevin Johnson, who averaged 29.3 points and 9.3 assists in three games, was named Player of the Week.

College field hockey

Maryland -- Announced that coach Missy Meharg has been named mid-Atlantic region Coach of the Year by the College Field Hockey Coaches Association. Also announced that senior Lisa Buente (28 goals this season, 70 career) was a first-team All-America.


AHL -- LW Darrin Shannon of the Rochester Americans was named Player of the Week. Shannon had 4 goals and 7 assists in four games. G Tom Draper of the Moncton Hawks, two wins in three games including a shutout, was runner-up.

NHL -- D Ray Bourque of the Boston Bruins was named Player of the Week. Bourque had 7 points in three games. RW Brett Hull of St. Louis Blues, who had four goals and three assists in three games, and C Steve Yzerman of Detroit Red Wings, who had three goals and five assists in four games, were runners-up.

College soccer

Maryland -- Announced that G Carmine Isaaco and S Nigel Burdett earned second-team honors on the South Atlantic Region All-America team. F Paul Boardman and M John Garvey were named to the third team.
