Would you pay taxes to stop layoffs?

It's your call

December 17, 1990

Last week, Gov. William Donald Schaefer said that state worker layoffs were necessary to help erase the state's budget deficit, now standing at an estimated $243 million. Schaefer relented somewhat Friday, saying he would instead consider budget-cutting options proposed by the legislature.

The Evening Sun would like to know: Would you consider paying higher taxes to avoid state worker layoffs? Or do you think state programs should be cut to avoid having to lay people off? We'd like you to share your opinion with us.

Please call SUNDIAL, the Baltimore Sun's telephone information system, on a touch-tone phone. The call is free and answers will be registered between 10 a.m. and midnight. The SUNDIAL phone number is 783-1800 or, in Anne Arundel County, 268-7736. When you reach SUNDIAL, enter category 4600 and wait for instructions.

Results will be published in this section tomorrow.

"It's Your Call" represents a sampling of opinions from certain segments of the community, but it is not balanced demographically, as would be done in a scientific public opinion poll.
