County Closing Hours

December 16, 1990

The county commissioners have decided to close government buildings and offices on Monday, Dec. 24 and 31.

The commissioners took the action as a cost-cutting measure to create four-day vacation weekends each week and conserve fuel. County offices will be closed Dec. 25, 1990, and Jan. 1, 1991.

The county Department of Management and Budget recommended the long weekends to combat the county's projected $2.5 million deficit, which could expand to $3 million if proposed cuts in state aid are made.

Employees will be granted four hours of administrative leave for Dec.

24. The additional hours on Dec. 24 and 31 will be charged to the employee's own personal or annual leave account. Provisions will be made for employees who have no accrued leave or are on probation.

The closings will not result in pay loss for any employee, said Commissioner President Donald I. Dell.

Ed Bilz, Carroll chapter president of the Maryland Classified Employees Association, declined to comment on the decision. He said he hadn't had time to talk to association members to get a consensus on the decision.

County landfills will be open from 7 a.m. to noon Dec. 24 and from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Dec. 31.
