School Update Given

December 16, 1990

WESTMINSTER - Lester Surber, supervisor of school facilities for the Carroll County public schools, told members of the city Zoning and Planning Commission Thursday night that the new Friendship Valley Elementary will be at capacity when it opens in September 1992.

The facility on Gist Road will absorb the students currently in portables from Robert Moton, Westminster and William Winchester elementaries, he said.

Redistricting for the schools will begin in January 1992, Surber said.

However, another elementary school will be necessary with the projected growth, he said. Also, space will be necessary for several new early intervention preschool programs, he said.

A site, which should be about 20 acres, has not yet been chosen for the school.

Surber also said the county should aggressively seek property and take advantage of the current economic downturn and lower land prices.

In other zoning activity, the final plat was approved for the Smith addition on 27 and 27 Westmoreland St.

The owners of the duplex, which had been sold as one house, asked to have the lot divided so each side could be sold separately.

"They're looking for the highest and best use," said John D. Dudderar, city clerk.

The 6-year-old home should conform to all building regulations, including a fire wall between the dwellings, he said.

A variance dividing the property had been granted in October.
