Pro Musica Rara to mark Beethoven's birthday

Today is Beethoven's 220th birthday and Pro Music Rara, Baltimore's premier early music ensemble, will celebrate at 3 p.m. in the Baltimore Museum of Art with a performance of the composer's first published work, the Trio in E-flat for piano, cello and piano.

The rest of the program, which will be performed by the PMR Fortepiano Trio (violinist Cynthia Roberts, cellist Allen Whear and fortepianist Shirley Mathews), includes piano trios of Mozart and Haydn. Tickets are $12 ($9 for BMA members and seniors and $5 for students). For further information, call 889-4920. The Donetsk Ballet, which gained notoriety last winter when management difficulties left the Soviet company stranded in Baltimore, will return Wednesday night to the Lyric Opera House for first of 11 performances of Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker."

The 50-year-old company, based in the Ukrainian city of Donetsk, is now on better financial footing. It is regarded as one of the Soviet Union's top dance troupes.

Performances are scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m.; Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; next Sunday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Dec. 27 at 2 p.m.; Dec. 29 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; and Dec. 30 at 2 p.m. Tickets range from $17.50 to $29.50. To charge tickets, call 481-6000; for information, call 889-3900. Selections from Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker" will highlight the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra's annual holiday concerts in the chapel at St. Mary's Seminary and University on Tuesday and Wednesday at 8 p.m.

BCO music director Anne Harrigan will conduct, while organist Margaret Budd is the featured soloist. Besides the Tchaikovsky, the program also features works by Albinoni, Handel and Respighi.

Tickets are $12, $7 for senior citizens and students. St. Mary's is located at Roland Avenue and Northern Parkway. For more information, call 366-8973.
