THAI RESTAURANT, 3316 Greenmount Ave. Open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 to 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday. Phone: 889-7303.

Baltimore's original Thai Restaurant is arguably its best, providing lightening-fast service whether carrying food out or dining in the pleasant pink room decorated with Thai paintings.

The greatest artistry, however, will be found on your plate -- beautifully garnished, crisp-tender combinations of vegetables, meats and spices and none of the heavy, gelatinous sauces that are found in many Chinese restaurants. At lunch, $6.75 will buy you a winning combination of soup, any stir fried chicken, beef, or shrimp dish on the lunch menu, with a crisp egg roll and Thai fried rice.

Fresh lemon grass, tomato and scallions flavor the delicious Clear Chicken Soup ($1.75). Pad Thai ($4.50), a nutty-sweet dish of tossed rice sticks, chopped scallions, egg shreds and plump shrimp, was too filling to finish at one sitting. A lighter bet is Chicken with Basil ($4.50 at lunch, $7.50 at dinner), a flavorful melange of tender chicken breast strips, fresh basil leaves, chilies and garlic. Other classics on the dinner menu are Beef Pra ($7.95), tender, lime-marinated strips of flank tossed with fresh chilies and scallions, and Sam Sa Hai (9.95), a sour-sweet mix of shrimp, squid and chicken in garlic sauce.

Call ahead with your order because the Thai Restaurant is mobbed on weekend evenings.
