Goren paces No. 25 Maryland over Howard, 90-70 State women

December 13, 1990

WASHINGTON -- The 25th-ranked University of Maryland (5-3), helped by a career effort from freshman Aluma Goren, starting in place of suspended senior Carla Holmes, beat Howard University (2-4) last night, 90-70, at Burr Gymnasium.

Holmes, a 5-foot-8 guard who had missed only seven of the team's last 107 games before this one, was suspended yesterday afternoon, according to an announcement by head coach Chris Weller. No terms were given, and Weller declined to comment on the action. Maryland's next game is in the Rutgers tournament, Dec. 28.

Holmes started 25 of the team's 32 games in its Final Four season of 1988-89, but has been an off-and-on starter the last two seasons. She had 10 starts in 29 games a year ago, and had started four of the seven this season.

Goren, who turned 21 on Monday and came to Maryland backed by four years experience with the Israeli national team, finished with 17 points, seven assists and eight rebounds in 34 minutes, all season highs for her. The tallest of the Terrapins' guards at 5-foot-11, she went into the game averaging eight points and three rebounds.

Freshman Bonnie Rimkus, a 6-foot-4 center from Pittsburgh, equaled career highs with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Karen Wilkins, Howard's leading scorer in each of her four seasons, had 22 points.
