Joyce M. Smith Vermont resident

Joyce M. Smith, mother of a former reporter for The Sun, died Sunday of emphysema at her home in Rutland, Vt. She was 78.

The former Joyce M. Plunkett was born in Randolph, Vt., and graduated from Colby Junior College in New London, N.H., and the Traphagen School of Fashion in New York.

Her husband, Milford K. Smith, a retired justice of the Vermont Supreme Court, died in 1984.

Mrs. Smith liked sewing and painting in oils.

She is survived by a daughter, Jane A. Smith, a former Sun reporter, of Southborough, Mass.; a son, Wilford K. Smith Jr. of Lawrenceville, N.J.; and three grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Tuesday in Rutland. The family suggested memorial contributions to the Vermont Lung Association, 30 Farrell St., South Burlington, Vt. 05401.
