John Brenza is a 68-year-old retired metallurgy engineer who lifts weights and drives the van for Anne Arundel Community College's Senior Guild tours.

Virginia Cruse is a 70-year-old retired psychologist who writes and illustrates for the Senior Guild newsletter at Anne Arundel Community College.

One day three years ago, during a walking class at the college, they were introduced.

The two Annapolitans announced their engagement to a crowd of friends Tuesday at the college's Senior Guild for Life Christmas party.

"We thought we could tell the most people in the shortest amount of time," the groom said.

They plan to marry Jan. 19 in a ceremony in St. Mary's City.

Brenza, who is enrolled in a Chinese language class at AACC, also speaks Spanish, German, Russian, Italian, French, Greek and Japanese. "But I fell back on English when I asked her to marry me," he joked.

The couple also enjoys traveling and recently took a trip to Greece.

"He's a wonderful traveling companion," said Cruse.

They also have taken cooking classes and frequent ethnic restaurants.

"I've put on a little weight since we've been together," Cruse said with smile.

At the ceremony and reception, they will be joined by her five children and his six -- as well as 14 grandchildren between them. The reception is set for Cruse's son's backyard in St. Mary's City.

Brenza and Cruse will be honeymooning at Walt Disney World and Epcot Center in Orlando, Fla.

"We wanted to have a fun honeymoon," Brenza said.

They will be living in Cruse's condominium when they return, and will also keep his home, "so I can feed the birds and putter around in my garden," Brenza said.
