polluted waters

December 12, 1990|By Cathy Drinkwater Better

versed only in the ways of

fences and clean, clipped lawns

out of their element

on the slippery stream-bank

they huddle close

an unconscious urge for comfort

in the mist of an alien world

mossy rocks

a treasure trove of wonder

as streamwater flows

between and around

tree roots exposed

water-shy bare feet

tender to pebbles

try to understand

what it must have been like

before

a milk carton floats by

they help it along

with a proffered stick

two would-be Huckleberries

in designer jeans
