1990-91 Anne Arundel County Wrestling At A Glance

Meade Mustangs

December 12, 1990

Head coach: Sam Pandulla (first year).

1989-1990 record: 7-7.

Top wrestlers: Seniors, Mike Dodd (125), Luther Scott (145), Pat Williams (160) and William Harvey (171); junior, Bill Fisher; sophomore, Mike Walker (130).

Coach's outlook: "The kids that we do have are not bad wrestlers, but we're young. Every weight class is filled, and we've got some experienced wrestlers, but we've also got some holes. Right now, we have a few individuals who will do very well, but we don't have enough quality bodies.

I think we should finish in the top half (of the league standings), but I'm not making any predictions because that could be suicidal. We'll just put our people on the mat and see what happens."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: The Mustangs are 1-1 after losing to Carroll County's North Carroll High, 62-6, and defeating Severna Park, 42-27, in a season-opening tri-meet. North Carroll is listed at No. 1, ahead of No. 2 Old Mill in the area rankings, but the match against Severna Park was closer than expected. The deficiencies in Meade's line-up were evident in that match, offsetting some impressive individual efforts.

Regional champion Luther Scott (26-7 last year) is the Mustangs' top returning wrestler, and Harvey adds some strength to the squad's upper weights. Meade finished a disappointing sixth in its tournament this past weekend, which appears to signal a rebuilding season. However, Dodd, Walker and Williams may finish near the top of their weight classes in the postseason tournament, but they will have to be steady contributors if the Mustangs are to improve on last year's regular-season record.
