1990-91 Anne Arundel County Wrestling At A Glance

Severn Admirals

December 12, 1990

Head coach: Bob Brogenrief (seventh season).

Assistant: Jim Roberts.

1989-1990 record: 6-4-1 (MSA C Conference co-champs with Patterson).

Top wrestlers: Juniors, Sanjay Manickam (125-130), Scott Lowe (125), Mike Brown (119) and Dave Astle (112); freshmen, Chris Thompson (103), Ed Han (135), Geoff Taylor (135) and Mark Robinson (140).

Coach's outlook: "Survival. We just have to look to the future. We have a good group of eighth-graders and right now we want to maintain the team and give the guys a chance to wrestle and compete. We're definitely in a rebuilding year. Realistically, from a varsity point of view, we're short on experience and numbers. We have some prospects, but the only guy on the team with experience is Sanjay Manickam. We graduated eight people, four of which had four or more years of experience. Last year, we didn't have any juniors on the team so we're definitely in a rebuilding year. We're not a wrestling power here but we do try to give the kids an opportunity to wrestle. We cannot have delusions about competing with some of the bigger schools. We're looking for guys to develop and become winners."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: Roberts' Admirals are a year away from challenging for the league title again, but with enthusiasm from veterans and a crop of eager eighth-graders, he's maintaining a positive outlook. He is two wrestlers deep in at least two weight classes and the competition there should keep those wrestlers primed. The Admirals may not challenge for the title, but they should be back again next season.
